P-Purl it real good.

I hope everyone made it through Part One and Two of our How to Knit for Beginners series. We  covered how to make a slip knot, cast on, the knit stitch, and garter stitch. Today, I’ll teach you how to purl and create that nice flat stockinette stitch.

If you’d like to see the full coaster pattern featured in the video and a brief introduction to reading patterns, you can find both of them here. If you’d like to see the techniques slowed down even more, here is a photo walkthrough of how to do the purl stitch:

stockinette 1
Move working yarn to the front
stockinette 2
Insert needle into stitch from back to front
stockinette 3
Pick up yarn
stockinette 4
Wrap yarn around needle
stockinette 5
Use the tip of the right hand needle…
stockinette 6
To pull the working yarn through
stockinette 7
And slip the stitch off the left hand needle
stockinette 8
Tighten and you’re done!

You have now purled one stitch! Repeat this across the row and you’re in business. Stay tuned until next week and we’ll learn how to Cast Off.
